Meeting doctors through online consultations is not a far-off concept. In fact, it has been around since the early 2000s in Western countries to minimize the risk of danger on self-diagnosis and treatments. Good as it may sound, one question still remains: is it applicable to the Philippine setting?
What are the benefits of online consultation?
It minimizes the risk of infection. Online consultations ensure you won’t be exposed to other patients who may be contagious. This is especially important for younger patients who may be more vulnerable to diseases.
It’s time and cost-efficient. You don’t have to commute or drive going to the hospital which saves you gas and fare, plus you don’t need to wait long hours in line to be checked.
You don’t have to diagnose yourself. Some people may turn to Dr. Google to look for answers searching for their symptoms with crossed fingers hoping they get things right, which can be thoroughly harmful for you. No matter how accurate you think one WebMD article may look based on how you’re feeling, nothing beats expert physician’s advice.
What are the limitations?
Doctors are not able to do physical exams. Certain situations require a thorough physical examination to accurately identify your health problem. No physical examination may lead to incorrect or missed diagnoses.
You may have a hard time purchasing prescription meds. It may be a challenge to buy prescription drugs using a printed or digital copy of your doc’s prescription. That’s why it’s better to find an online consultation that also provides a medicine delivery service. We deliver straight to your doorstep so you don’t have to get out.
Should you consider an online consultation?
While medical online consultation not for everyone, this is by far the best compromise we can get as opposed to the risks associated with making face-to-face consults. Still, you should consider your situation so you can decide whether this service applies to you or not.
Good for you if…
- Symptoms may be diagnosed without physical examination
- Location and transport is an issue
- You want a private but remote consultation
- Need fast medical attention
Better to consult in person if…
- You need emergency medical care
- You need a thorough physical examination for more accurate diagnosis
